General course description:
The Internet is a researcher's dream - and nightmare.
This seemingly boundless source of information creates problems not only in finding
information, but in assessing information quality, organizing resources so that they can
be quickly and easily accessed, and coordinating information access for use at home, in
the office and on the road. This course will focus on software tools and Internet
resources to assist researchers in finding and managing Internet information.
Purpose:
The purpose of this course is
to provide legal professionals with the following:

Information about new
technologies to assist researchers in organizing Internet information |
|
|
2. |
Hands-on truing in
using recommended Internet research tools (depending on new software development before
scheduled course dates, may include PowerMarks, PeakJet, AltaVista Discovery, Copernic,
Enfin Tracker Pro, X-Portal and/or other new programs that may become available prior to
the training date) |
|
|
3. |
Skills necessary to
assess the quality and value of Internet information |
|
|
4. |
Guidance and hands-on
training in the use of advanced search techniques including finding information on the
"hidden Web" |
|
|
5. |
Information about new
search engines and directories |
|
|
6. |
Resources for keeping
up-to-date on Internet research |
|
|
7. |
Recommended on-line
research information sources |
Methodology: All training is "hands on" at a fully functional PC
workstation with a live Internet connection through a high-speed ADSL line.
The first half of each training day will focus on software tools to organize and manage
information. Participants will then use these tools throughout the second half of the
training program which focuses on advance Internet searching including advanced search
engine and directory strategies and locating resources on the "hidden web."
Dates: One class each day on September 27, September 28, September
29, September 30, and October 1, 1999.
Cost: $394.25 for registrations received on
or before September 7, 1999. $415.00 after September 7, 1999.
Hours: 8 a.m. through 5:00 p.m.
Attendance: Limited to 10 persons in each class (one full day of training

Participants should have a basic familiarity with using Web
search engines and directories
Other: Training will include lunch and morning and afternoon refreshment
breaks
